Navigation - Part II

For 2nd part of the Navigation project the 1st part of the navigation project had to be reinterpreted into a physical piece.

For my 3D piece i took forward the line concept from my ipad for navigation.
The design is inspired by a spool of thread. Each color of the chord represents each element. As the purpose of my Ipad app was to help students and act as a guide to them with projects that can be done, the same interactivity has been carried forward in the physical piece. The voice of the physical piece calls out for the interactivity and makes sure that the viewer is indulged in it.
The circular motion of the spool is quiet visible in the whole piece.
On each flap of the heptagon, each element is placed. In the front side of the flap, there is definition along with example for each element. The back side of the flap shows related elements to the main element along with the research work. Later the base of the structure shows the viewer different projects being done for different elements.
All these elements are connected through colored chords, which starts from the front flap and goes all the way to the back and the bottom of the piece and wraps itself on the central cylinder to form a spool of threads.
As we have seen in the Ipad app, the colored lines start from the "elements of design" in a mixed form, here in the physical piece also the threads reached the "elements of design" by combining into each other.
The idea behind combining the chords is, that any design is incomplete without any one of the elements, therefore, while making the final design, we combine the knowledge of all the elements to form a sound and beautiful design.
In the 3D piece, balance has been maintained by the circular motion of the structure. the front of the flap has been divided into 2 rows grid which has been maintained throughout. As far as the voice of the piece is concerned, it calls out for curiosity to open up the structure and understand what is there inside it.

Following are the images that will tell you about the design of the structure...

Navigation Project

In this project, we have to organize the collected resources (our blog) into a navigable design app.
All the 11 topics as covered in the semester and related research and observation of the same has to be put in the app.
In this the target audience has to be decided and the purpose of the app even needs to be decided to make the navigation through the app appropriate.

For the app, I chose it to be named as Elements of Design. The basic idea behind this app is to make the concept of all the elements understandable to a student. The purpose of this app is to help a design student entering the school understand the concepts of design and different elements of the design. Along with the definition and examples, the student also has the additional benefit of having a project related to each element which they can practice.
All the elements are joined through lines these lines provide the navigation through the whole app. Each line has a separate color and weight which is constant throughout the app and is related to a single element.

The first half of the app is dedicated to the definitions and examples for the elements and the second half is for "projects to do". The name of the element and the project is connected through lines. Each element has a small tab near them which will direct the student to the project related to that.
In hierarchy terms major importance has been given to the name of the elements. The progression of tints and shades of the same color has been used to create a depth in the design. The middle-ground has been utilized for the definitions. Rest of the information has been put on the background.
The whole design of the app is bright and inviting due to colors and feature of jumping from one topic to the other related topic. the colors make the app very interesting. Also there is a flow of information from one topic to other.
For navigation the primary role is being played by Lines. Also the buttons and call outs help in linking the students to web world for more and detailed information.

Hierarchy - Project

In this project we had to select any one of the Amendment from the Bill of Rights.

The Amendment that i chose was Amendment VI. In lay man's word, Amendment VI simply stated the right that a criminal has once he is in the jail. He has a set of rights which no one can take away from him such as right to be informed of the accusation, right to speedy and public trial and so on.

We had to communicate the same amendment in 3 different ways for a flyer.

In first part - Extreme scale change had to be used
In second part - minimal scale change had to be used
In third part - Image had to be used

In this part, i have used Hierarchy in terms of scale change to emphasize on the important words and phrases that are being told in this amendment. Most important things have been stated in bold and in the highest font size. Following font size tell us about the second important things. This kind of flyer design is most apt for the time when the person does not have time and can just have a hint of the whole amendment for his help.

In this part, minimal scale change had to be used. So in order to achieve hierarchy with minimal scale change i applied the use of different weights of the same font to decide on the most important and the least important information.

In this part, an image had to be used. As this amendment is about the criminal prosecution and the rights that a criminal has while he is in the jail, i decided to use the vector image of prison bars for this. The prison bars are in the center of the page with AMENDMENT VI behind it to suggest that the amendement is for the criminals for help. Also the amendment is written on the prison bars in for anyone to read it. From a distance this flyer will make it obvious for the viewer about the audience for the amendment.

Out of these three i feel the 3rd one is the most successful because it can be recognized from a distance and it acts as a symbol which people highly recognize. From a distance we can make out the amendment number and also that this amendment is about the criminal rights.

The color that i chose was in accordance with the colors that we associate with law and order.

Project - Voice

In this project we had to select a corner and design typographically a message that needs to go in the corner.

The corner that i chose for this is one of the corner of my apartment.
One side of the corner leads to the room of Computer Science students, who are always indulged into coding and do not like when disturbed.
The other side of the corner leads to rooms of the other roommates who need to know that they should not disturb the gals in the other room.
Keeping in mind the point that there are two different audience in this corner and the messaga has to be given to tow different people in tow different ways, i started with the designing of the message.

The message was : "DO NOT DISTURB CODING IN PROGRESS"

The first part of the message is for the girls who live down the hallway and should not disturb the other girls staying in the room.

The second part of the message was just a reminder for the girls in the room that they have a certain work to do.

For first part i used a light weight font and had a lot pf spacing between the letter. This was done because though this was a message that has to be adhered to, it was also a message that is in the interior of the apartment. So keeping in mind that point it has to be made subtle and not loud.

For second part, bold letters were used with the pattern that reminds the viewer of coding. It has been put as a wallpaper  because it is the work that they do and have to do in fact.

Rhythm Project

This project is based on creating an accordion book with the accidental imagery which we find.

In this book i have tried to create a rhythmic concept with  the placement of the text. I have tried to create a flow in text by arranging the text from top to bottom and again from bottom to top as it goes through the pages. The black background on cover and back is done to distinguish it from the spreads.

The found imagery was a challenge to create a story and form a book. choosing 10 correct pieces out of  hundreds of the pieces was interesting and also gave me the sense of story building through imagery. The combining of the images with each other and along with the background and typography was nice and interesting.

There was not much of the found typography in my imagery., except for one. In that imagery i tried to use the found typography as a graphic element rather than a word, because of which it did not affect my own typography. The balance of font size was limited to important words being highlighted. This helped in creating a clutter free overall hierarchy.

I did use the grid in this layout to arrange the imagery that i had. Especially in the paged where more than one imagery has been used, the grid system was used to create a rhythmic balance between the images and the text.

Grid Project

This project is about Grid system which is used widely in Graphic Design.

The project was done in 2 parts.

In the first part, we had to select an emotion. Then this emotion had to be depicted in a grid area of 18" x 24", through 3 colors.
Whereas in the second part, keeping in mind the color story that we had build in the previous part, we had to create the same story through typography.

The Emotion that i chose was Envy in which i had involved colors like green, blue and purple.

The color story evolves around the emotions that a human feel when he/she is surrounded by envy.
Envy bring jealousy and evil. It rip-aparts the peace of mind even when you want to stay calm. The peace of mind is calm in nature. But once you are bitten by the bug of jealousy, you just cannot be calm.
One fine line of calmness and peace is taken away and thrown out of the mind. The envy overcomes the sweetness and dilutes it. It forces you to become pessimist and ignore optimism. It leads you to the negative thoughts and even tries to mix your positive attitude with it.
This is how you react when envy overpowers your mind. Your thoughts are just not still. It wanders in different directions. It ignores the sweetness to concentrate on evil.
And finally pushes positive towards negative thoughts.

In order to depict this color story through the grid, i tried creating a pull inside it. I tried taking advantage of the sides of the grid to create a pulling sensation. The unstable flow of the boxes further adds to the instability of the emotion chosen. The initial grid composition did have the instability that i wanted to achieve but was nor clearly visible. Later i changed the placement of certain boxes which helped me to come up with the final design.

The colors are light at the focal point (i.e.) lower left side of the grid. And as the color progresses towards the corners of the grid it becomes darker and darker. This color progression from light to dark shows how optimism changes into pessimism gradually.
The photographs were taken by concentrating only on  the colors that i wanted to achieve, rather than on the imagery of the pictures. Mostly images of fabric has been used which helped me in achieving the grades in a single color.

In the second part the same effect had to be created with the help of typography.
The tweet was - From optimist to pessimist, from negative to positive, Life travels from end to end in search of and in pursuit of EVIL!!

The base of the my color story was that we are not able to concentrate on one thing and get carried away with the negative thoughts. By breaking the typography into single letters and placement of the same in random way helped me in achieving the same.
The typeface that i chose is straight but its random placement added to the effect that i wanted to create. The dramatic difference in the font size gives the feeling of being lost among the negative thoughts.

Project - Colors

Colors are the integral part of any design. In this project the typography and figure/ground relation has been combined with color exploration to come up with different versions of same design.

Item on same - Costume jewellery

Color name - Teasing orange, Vivacious pink & Solemn blue
Item on same - Cosmetics

Color name - Pottery brown, Volcanic red & Midnite blue
Item on sale - Shoes

The color I chose for this project is Blue. Blue is always the coolest color, the color of sky, the color of twilight and many other beautiful things. For me it is a very calming color and a symbol of purity.

In this process of exploring different possibilities of blue color i have come across a range of colors. Though the blue color is calm and tranquil, its pairing with different colors changes its perception. I got to understand that the same color when changes its tint and shade gives a different feel. Also when a very bright color is added to the calm and peaceful color it changes the entire perception. For example in case of Teasing orange and vivacious pink, the cool nature of the blue color is not seen at all.
Also though we generally consider blue to be associated with water and sky, its combination with other colors changes its association to be with a wide variety of products and articles.

The whole project was mainly focused on the combination of colors with different complimentary, analogous and neutral pairs. This project has allowed me to explore the infinite range of colors which i had never even thought of. Also every visual presentation has a figure ground relation. Therefore a color plays an important role in it. This relationship between figure and ground is more visible if there is contrast which can be created with the help of colors. Another important thing that was observed in this project was that when two opposite colors are placed with each other in close proximity, the figure tend to vibrate or cast a shadow. In this care the viewer has to squint their eyes to see it properly.

In my design there is a strong presence of typeface. But the same is sometimes not seen in certain color combinations where tints and shades within the same hue family is reduced. This tends to merge the figure and ground and the clear distinction is not there.
